Hybridization for helicopter

Safran is studying several hybrid configurations to more efficiently use the power generated by “more electric” twin-engine helicopters. Safran Helicopter Engines’ “eco mode” concept places one engine in standby mode during cruise, reducing fuel consumption up to 15% and increasing range. A smart auxiliary electric motor quickly restarts the engine when additional power is needed. Developed together with Safran Electrical & Power, the Electrical Power Pack Helicopter (ePPH) demonstrator validated this concept in ground tests and will be soon flight-tested.
