Safran is hosting the European operations center for the Sprint Advanced Concept Training exercise organized by the US Air Force

Business

Caen, France, January 2020

The US Air Force Space Command, in cooperation with the Department of Commerce (DoC), initiated the third edition of the Sprint Advanced Concept Training (SACT) exercise held last Decembrer. For the first time, the SACT exercise was conducted by three operations centers around the globe (United States, France and Australia), allowing for continuous monitoring throughout the exercise.

The purpose of this exercise is to conduct space surveillance for several days. To do so, several recognized industrialists in the sector combine their capacities and know-how to obtain precise results on real events (detection of maneuvers and characterization of satellites, collision risks, etc.). The results obtained by the industrialists are then compared with the results emanating from the governmental and military capabilities in place, with a view to highlighting the solutions and capabilities still to be developed in order to set up faithful and sustainable space surveillance.

The Zodiac Data Systems site in Colombelles, chosen as the European operations center for this exercise, received on this occasion some thirty international participants from the space surveillance community – government and commercial actors – operating Zodiac Data Systems’ WeTrack service.

« To host such an event is to be at the heart of the action, in the construction of the regulatory landscape of spatial traffic management. Beyond the technological innovation we practice daily and the technical solutions we know how to provide, it is by working collaboratively with all the stakeholders in the field that we make space surveillance a reality. Zodiac Data Systems was particularly honored to be offered the opportunity to host this operation: it is a sign of recognition and trust on the part of the community. » said Jean-Marie Bétermier, CEO of Zodiac Data Systems.

WeTrack allows the identification, whatever the atmospheric conditions, of satellites by their radio-frequency signature and thus the unambiguous separation of adjacent or co-located satellites. The accuracy of the data from WeTrack complements that of other sensors (Optical, Radar…). WeTrack’s data services offer an immediately available solution for experimenting applications in the field of space traffic management, but also for diversifying the sources of information for satellite operators and other governmental actors.
