French space agency CNES once again chooses Safran Data Systems’ telemetry receivers

Les Ulis, France, June 30, 2020

French space agency CNES (Centre National d’Études Spatiales), with support from the European Space Agency (ESA), has chosen telemetry receivers from Safran Data Systems to be used with the new Ariane 6 launch vehicle, operated from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana (South America). These receivers handle critical data from the launcher so that the entire launch can be tracked in real time.

CNES chose Safran Data Systems’ latest-generation receivers for Ariane 6. They meet all CNES specifications, while incorporating a number of innovative solutions to improve mission preparation and execution, including the ability to replay a simulated or recorded radio-frequency (RF) signal, and also simultaneously process multiple telemetry signals with a single, compact receiver.

An initial series of receivers will be installed in the ground stations used for the first launch of Ariane 6, and this same model will then be installed in all other launch tracking stations.

“Safran Data Systems’ proposed telemetry receiver included innovative solutions we needed for Ariane 6 launches, meeting both our technical specifications and our program timeline,” said Quentin Lacoste, project manager at the CNES ground sub-division.

“We’re very honored to be chosen by CNES,” added Jean-Marie Bétermier, CEO of Safran Data Systems. “This selection reflects our expertise in telemetry, based on decades of experience in the field. Over these years we have come up with a number of innovations, which have become industry standards. By choosing our company, CNES knows that it can count on a solid partner for Ariane 6, as well as for all future launchers in the pipeline.”

Safran Data Systems is already the long-standing supplier of receivers for all Ariane 5, Vega and Soyuz launches from Kourou, allowing proper tracking of all launch trajectories.
