100th Precision Azimuth Vertical Angle Module (PAVAM) delivered by Safran

Eurosatory 2018, Paris-Nord Villepinte, June 14, 2018

Safran Optics 1 announces delivery of the 100th Precision Azimuth Vertical Angle Module (PAVAM) to a US system integrator.

Based on Safran’s hemispherical resonator gyroscope, HRG CrystalTM and developed by Safran Electronics and Defense, PAVAM is an innovative True North Finder unique in terms of Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP), precision, and reliability. The 100th PAVAM device has been delivered to Leonardo DRS to be utilized in their Joint Effects Targeting System (JETS), according to Safran Optics 1. PAVAM is utilized as a subsystem which, when integrated with a targeting system, helps provide unrivaled precision targeting capabilities to Soldiers in any climate and in GPS-denied environments.

Thanks to its robust algorithms and high performance HRG CrystalTM gyroscopes, PAVAM finds true north very quickly by sensing the earth’s rotation and determining the azimuth to north. Without any calibration phase, PAVAM provides accurate latitude information. This allows the Soldier to perform precision targeting missions with greater reliability, faster, and with lighter equipment than ever before.

The PAVAM module also helps the system to maintain the north. Moreover, the PAVAM at standstill continues to improve its azimuth accuracy in the background without operator interaction, allowing the Soldier to stay focused on his mission.

According to Bob Lachance, Vice President of Business Development with Safran Optics 1: “With high accuracy, low SWaP, and unique reliability, Safran has demonstrated once again its capability to provide innovative solutions to US Soldiers.  We are happy to provide PAVAM to the Soldier in partnership with Leonardo DRS and the Army”.

With this program, Safran Optics 1, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Safran Electronics & Defense, extends its portfolio of technologies and products for observation, detection, location, and targeting missions. Safran Optics 1, based in Bedford, New Hampshire, designs and produces advanced electro-optical systems and subsystems for defense and security applications.

Safran is an international high-technology group, operating in the aircraft propulsion and equipment, space and defense markets. Safran has a global presence, with more than 58,000 employees and sales of 16.5 billion euros in 2017. Safran is listed on the Euronext Paris stock exchange, and is part of the CAC 40 and Euro Stoxx 50 indices.
