April 28 marks the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, a global initiative organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and incidents. This year’s theme is: “Revolutionizing health and safety: The role of AI and digitalization at work.”

Safran Seats in Gainesville, Texas manufactures passenger seats for economy, premium economy and domestic business class. The site has embraced digitalization by implementing a new energy consumption monitoring system to provide a more proactive and data-driven approach to energy consumption.

“The core components of Safran Seats’ digital energy consumption monitoring system include sensors for real-time data collection, a software dashboard for visualization and analysis, and algorithms for data aggregation and forecasting,” said Jessica Osner, Environmental Administrator at Safran Seats. “These components work together to optimize energy usage, deliver cost savings, and drive sustainable change.”

Nodes are placed on machinery; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and compressors to measure energy usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh). The system provides real-time monitoring and alerts, which enables the site to analyze the data and make the necessary adjustments.

“With the insights obtained from the system, we have been able to decrease the consumption of the compressors by having the nodes on them,” she added.

This initiative is just one example of Safran’s commitment to adopting digitalization to improve workplace health, safety and environment (HSE) methods.
