Strengthening Safran’s multi-generational workforce in North America

The Safran North America Mentorship Program was launched in early 2017 to pair early career Safran employees – the mentees – with mid-to-late career professionals – the mentors – who provide guidance on career development and advancement in areas such as communication, leadership, and technical skills.
As part of its entry-level strategy, Safran’s North America Talent Management decided to offer this opportunity to a VIE (Volontariat International en Entreprises) participant. Referred to in English as the International Postgraduate Internship Program, VIE promotes the international development of French companies while offering recent graduates and young professionals an opportunity to benefit from formative experiences across the world.
The selected VIE is Sophie Roynette, a financial analyst for the Safran Human Resources Services (SHRS) department in Irving, Texas.
“Sophie is the only VIE to have been selected for our mentorship program,” said Janice White, Director, Talent Management - North America. “As a self-motivated, proactive, and articulate problem-solver, she possesses the key qualities needed to succeed in this program. Her professionalism and commitment to the Group were also contributing factors.”
Learning more, working in a new environment
Having worked for Safran Transmission Systems in France as both an internal controller and then as a consolidation controller, Roynette already was familiar with one branch of the Safran family tree, and the VIE program “granted my two wishes,” she said. “To learn more about the Safran group, and to work abroad in a new environment.”
In her financial analyst role, Roynette performs accounts analysis and intercompany billing. Her paired mentor is Benoit Guerder, the chief financial officer of CFM Materials (a joint venture between Safran Aircraft Engines and General Electric) in nearby Grand Prairie. “His advice helps me on a day-to-day basis,” she said.
“As a financial analyst, I am in contact with many Safran divisions in North America,” said Roynette, “and my mentor also is a direct client of mine. He was able to share his client point of view of my work, giving me a new and fresh perspective.”
Calling the Safran mentorship program a customized career learning experience, Roynette said it helps her improve specific skills and has provided her with valuable professional development.
She noted that the learning is reciprocal: “It’s a real exchange between the mentee and the mentor.” As an example, she described a conference call in which she presented on Safran USA and Safran Human Resources Services financial numbers.
“The presentation helped us both,” said Roynette. “Me on my communication skills, and Benoit on better understanding the financial culture of these two entities.”
Safran will be kicking off the 2018 Mentorship program in January, and expects to hire about 30 VIEs during the course of the year.
