Safran’s continued focus on green aviation was highlighted during the SpeedNews Commercial Aviation Industry Suppliers Conference, held in Los Angeles, California on June 7-9.

During an interactive chat – themed “Aviation’s Climate Imperative” and facilitated by Joe Anselmo, Editorial Director, Aviation Week Network – Peter Lengyel, President & CEO of Safran USA discussed the Group’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

Lengyel underscored Safran’s multi-pronged strategy which includes contributing to the development of low carbon aircraft, reducing emissions from its industrial sites, supporting the deployment of sustainable fuels, and developing electric and hybrid propulsion systems for aircraft.

With 75 percent of its research and technology investment focused on reducing the company’s environmental footprint, Safran was recently recognized as the No. 1 applicant for patents in the French clean energies sector. Looking ahead, the Group has made ambitious commitments, to include achieving a 30 percent reduction in emissions from its industrial sites around the world by 2025 (compared with 2018 levels) and phasing in the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) for civil engine tests: 10 percent by the end of 2021, and 35 percent by 2025.

To illustrate the Group’s sustainable aviation strategy, Lengyel provided examples of Safran innovations in progress, including collaboration on electric and hybrid propulsion projects and development of innovative services by leveraging Big Data.
