Safran contributes to the on-time certification of Airbus’ LEAP-1A-powered A320neo jetliner

The Airbus A320neo (new engine option) jetliner with its LEAP-1A turbofan engine has now been certified, maintaining the schedule established at program go-ahead five years ago and clearing the way for the jetliner’s service introduction this summer.

Safran has a significant role in the A320neo, beginning with the LEAP-1A turbofan engines that are produced by Cincinnati, Ohio-based CFM International, a joint venture of Safran Engines and GE Aviation. CFM International is one of the aviation industry’s most successful international collaborations, having delivered more than 22,000 engines to date – with the LEAP-1A high-bypass turbofan becoming the latest member of its product line.

Safran Nacelles is another Safran group company with a significant role in the LEAP-1A-powered A320neo jetliner. It has overall responsibility for the nacelle design, production and its integration with the LEAP-1A, followed by deliveries of complete propulsion systems to Airbus.

The LEAP-1A nacelle/propulsion system integration currently is performed at Safran Nacelles’ Colomiers, France podding facility – located near Airbus' A320 aircraft family production lines at Toulouse.

A new, purpose-built Safran Nacelles integration facility is being readied at Hamburg, Germany, where Airbus also builds the A320-series jetliners on multiple final assembly lines within the Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport production facility. Additionally, Safran Nacelles is in the process of defining the arrangements for an on-site physical presence in Mobile, Alabama on America's Gulf Coast, which is home to Airbus' latest A320 family final assembly line.

Other Safran group business involved with the A320neo are Safran Landing Systems, providing landing gear systems; along with Safran Electrical & Power, supplying wiring and electrical connectors.
