Safran Aero Boosters invests in EDM Technology

Business

The year 2017 will see a significant ramp-up in production at Safran Aero Boosters. The company has invested in a major multi-year industrial plan worth almost €140m with a view to manufacturing modules intended for the latest generation engines, primarily for the Boeing 737 MAX, Airbus A320neo and Comac C919.

The increased automation of production lines is one of the main focuses of the plan which is intended to see Safran Aero Boosters retain its position as a market leader. The numerous investments made include tried and tested wire-cut EDM technology which will optimize the entire process of one of its flagship products: engine oil equipment.

While, until not so long ago, they were once broached and rectified, Safran Aero Boosters lubrication units will now be manufactured using Electrical discharge machining (EDM). This manufacturing process involves removing material from the workpiece by a series of rapidly recurring current discharges. While in practical terms the process makes it possible to machine with great precision using deep strength steel, it will also improve the repeatability of operations. Boasting the most efficient lines on the market, Safran Aero Booster is keen to pursue the production engineering techniques of the future, offering optimum quality assurance, lead time compliance and retaining its position alongside the leaders.
