Safran Aero Boosters inaugurates wind turbine and 3,000 photovoltaic panels at Herstal site in Belgium
On January 23 and 24, Safran Aero Boosters inaugurated a new renewable energy production infrastructure at its Herstal site, comprising a 105-metre-high wind turbine managed by Luminus, and a canopy of over 3,000 photovoltaic panels positioned over the parking lot by Enersol. With a maximum output of 3 megawatts, the Belgian industrial site now generates 40% of its electricity requirements through sustainable, local production—twice as much as in 2023.
On January 23, the company's entire workforce was proud to celebrate the culmination of several months' hard work. The following day, the ribbon was cut with all the stakeholders and all those who contribute to making these ambitious projects possible. The new facilities were inaugurated by Nathalie Stubler, Safran's Chief Sustainability Officer, François Lepot, CEO of Safran Aero Boosters, Grégoire Dallemagne, CEO of Luminus, Samuel Bragard, Jean-François Bragard and Marc Gillet, Directors at Enersol, Philippe Henry, Walloon Minister of Climate, Energy, Mobility and Infrastructure, Frédéric Daerden, Minister in charge of the Budget at the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and Christie Morreale, Walloon Minister of Employment.
These facilities mark a turning point in Safran Aero Boosters' commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of its industrial site, doubling its annual production of locally generated renewable electricity and cutting its carbon emissions by 20%.
"Safran's commitment to the energy transition and decarbonization is once again taking shape today with the inauguration of these facilities in Herstal, in line with our global strategy to reduce our carbon footprint. Beyond the key role we play in developing decarbonized aircraft, we have ambitious targets, such as reducing CO₂ emissions from our operations by 50% by 2030 compared with 2018, in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement." - Nathalie Stubler, Safran Chief Sustainability Officer
"These new facilities contribute to Safran Aero Boosters' ambitions in terms of decarbonization, and are part of a more overarching drive to transform the site, for which we are deploying energy sobriety and biodiversity projects. We also hope to spread our sustainable development approach to neighboring companies and even further afield, as well as to our own employees." - François Lepot, CEO, Safran Aero Boosters
Collaboration with Luminus and Enersol
A 105-meter wind turbine has been installed by Luminus at the back of the industrial site. Safran Aero Boosters and Luminus have signed an agreement to install a wind turbine on the company's premises, and for Luminus to manage it, primarily for Safran Aero Boosters. Once the test phase has been completed, the wind turbine will generate 10% of Safran Aero Boosters' electricity requirements.
3,000 photovoltaic panels have been installed on the parking lot canopy by Enersol. They will be dedicated to self-consumption and will cover 10% of the company's electricity requirements. Installed in urbanized areas, these panels have no impact on the biodiversity developed on the site. In addition, they provide shelter for the company's staff vehicles, for which charging systems have been fitted by Mobilize Power Solutions (a subsidiary of the Enersol group).
A high voltage substation has been installed on the site to enable local self-consumption of the electricity generated by these infrastructures.
Safran Aero Boosters employees are very proud of the new infrastructure, which underlines the company's commitment to a sustainable future.
