A record contract for Messier-Bugatti-Dowty

Business

Iberia, a subsidiary of IAG, Europe’s third largest airline operator, has entrusted landing gear maintenance on its Airbus A320 fleets to Messier-Bugatti-Dowty (Safran).

On November 16, 2015 Messier-Bugatti-Dowty (Safran) won the landing gear maintenance contract for Iberia?s A320 fleet, becoming the exclusive service provider for IAG (International Airlines Group) for this type of aircraft. This MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) contract is the largest ever signed by Messier-Bugatti-Dowty since its creation in 2001.

A global contract

Messier-Bugatti-Dowty?s MRO division was already providing landing gear maintenance for IAG on Iberia?s A340-600 fleet and British Airways? A320s. Having been named best service provider by the latter, the company consequently saw itself entrusted with landing systems maintenance for the Airbus A320 fleets of all IAG companies, making for a total of 280 aircraft. ..

Landing gear overhaul contract

The contract covers the overhaul of landing gear: an operation that consists in a full disassembly of the gear every ten years, checking and replacing parts before reassembly. Depending on the location of the aircraft, these operations will be provided at the Gloucester plant (United Kingdom) or the Quertaro plant (Mexico).

To deal with this new business volume, Messier-Bugatti-Dowty has already reorganized the operational framework of the Gloucester plant in view of the fact that its capacity will be doubling by 2018.

A guarantee of quality and flexibility

?IAG wished to entrust these operations to a primary service provider capable of guaranteeing a high level of performance in terms of quality, cost and time? explains Alan Doherty, Vice President Sales & Business Development of Messier-Bugatti-Dowty?s MRO division. The airline operator also considered that the company that designs and produces the landing gear was best qualified to maintain it. Moreover, ? On a number of occasions, British Airways had an opportunity to appreciate the responsiveness and flexibility of our teams. As we manage a large number of contracts, we are able to adapt more easily to scheduling changes.? This parameter is crucial for airlines, as the immobilization of an aircraft represents a significant shortfall.
