How AI improves the observation capabilities of battle tanks
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into defense systems is revolutionizing the way armed forces understand tactical environments. Safran Electronics & Defense offers innovative solutions, such as its ACE advanced cognitive engine, already integrated into the PASEO sight of the Leclerc tank, and modernized as part of the SCORPION program.

Advanced Cognitive Engine (ACE), a field asset

ACE, Advanced Cognitive Engine
ACE helps users better understand the tactical situation with automatic threat detection and classification features, even in the harshest environmental conditions. Integrated into optronic and navigation systems, ACE accelerates decision-making, an indispensable asset in the field.
ACE uses deep learning, a branch of AI based on neural networks. These networks mimic the functioning of the human brain to analyze complex data and draw lessons from it. With this technology, systems equipped with ACE can:
- Enhance target detection and identification through efficient classification algorithms;
- Correct environmental disturbances such as dust, or lighting variations;
- Continuously evolve by enriching their databases with new observations made in the field.
The Leclerc MBT and the French Army SCORPION Program

One of the most recent applications of AI in defense is the integration on PASEO Commander sight of advanced Observation functions.
Based on ACE, AI made in Safran Electronics & Defense, these functions significantly improve surveillance, detection and target classification capabilities.
The Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) recently notified Safran Electronics & Defense and KNDS France about integrating AI functionalities into the PASEO Commander's sight of the Leclerc MBT.
This amendment is part of the contract for modernizing the sights of the Leclerc XLR MBT. It aims to improve the performance of the tank’s sights, in particular by replacing the Commander sight with a PASEO panoramic sight and modernizing the legacy Gunner sight with the same sensors as PASEO. To assist the Commander in accomplishing their mission, the PASEO panoramic targeting sight will notably integrate an automatic threat classification functionality to analyze critical situations and accelerate decision-making even in the most complex contexts — a crucial element in maintaining battlefield initiative.
Thus, the Leclerc XLR MBT becomes the first vehicle in the SCORPION program to be equipped with AI-enhanced PASEO panoramic sight. This amendment ensures that the French army remains at the cutting edge of modern combat technology. It fully aligns with the goals of the SCORPION program, which aims to enhance the digital and operational capabilities of the French armed forces through cutting-edge technological innovations. The Leclerc XLR MBT embodies the future of the French armed forces: advanced technology serving speed and accuracy, while keeping the human at the center of decision-making. The challenges of AI in the defense sector continue to drive innovation, thereby ensuring increased operational efficiency against modern threats.
