Decarbonization at the heart of Safran Electronics & Defense's growth
How is this agreement, signed in January 2025, innovative?
C. GC.: Safran Electronics & Defense has always been one of Safran's pioneering companies in terms of decarbonization, and this agreement confirms that. First of all, this is the first time we have involved the social partners in comprehensive negotiations dedicated to low carbon. Until now, this issue had mainly been addressed in the context of eco-mobility, negotiated with the social partners. We have included in this agreement all low-carbon issues involving employees (energy efficiency, tertiary waste management, company catering, etc.), in addition to those related to mobility, whether commuting or business travel. The agreement also addresses levers for decarbonization in the management of social and cultural activities organized by the CSE(2), such as travel, partnerships, awareness-raising initiatives, etc.
Finally, more than just the outcome of negotiations, this agreement is the result of a genuine collaborative effort, as we prepared its content during participatory workshops between our teams (Social Relations, Low Carbon and CSR) and the trade unions.
This agreement is part of Safran Electronics & Defense's low-carbon strategy, which set interim targets for 2025. Where are we now?
F. N.: We do indeed have a more comprehensive roadmap, which is itself an offshoot of the Low Carbon Plan launched by Safran in 2018. However, we have set ourselves even more ambitious targets, such as halving our greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 compared to 2018. And we are well on track to achieve this goal, as we had already reduced emissions by 43% in 2024. This figure should be compared with our revenue growth, which doubled between 2018 and 2024. This shows that it is possible for a company to reconcile development with controlling its environmental impact!
We are now looking ahead to 2030, with the ambition of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% (again compared to 2018), and to 2050, when we must achieve carbon neutrality. At the same time, we are working to reduce emissions linked to mobility in the broadest sense (employee travel, freight, etc.), to the use of the products we sell, and to our purchasing. In the latter area, we have already achieved our 2025 goal, which was to support a number of suppliers in reducing their carbon footprint in line with the Group's commitments.
What role can employees play in Safran Electronics & Defense's low-carbon trajectory?
C. GC. : We are convinced that everyone's contribution counts! Employees are fully involved in the effort through their individual and team behavior: turning off production equipment when not in use, adopting energy-saving habits in the office (turning off lights and screens when leaving, etc.), choosing more environmentally friendly modes of transportation for commuting and business travel, and so on. It is this conviction that motivated this agreement, and I am convinced that we will collectively reap the benefits in the years to come.
