MINES ParisTech inaugurates BIGMECA chair

Paris, December, 11 2019

Supported by Safran, this new chair is dedicated to machine learning-based advanced mechanics for structural materials

MINES ParisTech, the leading engineering school in France in terms of partner-based research and an academic benchmark in predictive sciences for Industry 4.0, today inaugurated the BIGMECA chair, with support from Safran. Established for a period of five years, the chair will develop innovative methods, and mobilize techniques for model order reduction using neural networks to generate innovative new simulation methods for materials.

The BIGMECA chair will focus on techniques based on artificial intelligence to analyze the massive data sets now emerging from the widespread use of sensors and imaging systems. Furthermore, new 4D analysis possibilities will also incorporate mechanical loads to the non-destructive 3D analyses, signaling a major step forward in the study of various materials. The ultimate aim is to obtain a digital twin for the parts in question and to conduct high-speed simulations of material performance.

As part of this chair, the school will recruit a doctoral student, a post-doc and ten students in the specialized master's program, Design of Materials and Structures" (DMS). Other educational actions will be planned for the digital engineering and complex system (IDSC) option in the civil engineering program offered by MINES ParisTech.

The objectives of the BIGMECA chair are as follows:

  • Develop a complete methodology combining experimentation, simulation and statistical learning.
  • Accelerate the mechanical characterization of structural materials and the physical phenomena that limit their service life.
  • Generate fast forecasts of a part's lifespan, according to its geometry and characteristics.

"Both of us are very enthusiastic and eager to see the initial results of the convergence of experimental data and simulation. The application of statistical learning to mechanics will blaze a new path towards the understanding of the underlying mechanisms, as well as high-speed simulations of operational properties." Henry Proudhon and David Ryckelynck, researchers at the MINES ParisTech Materials Center, holder and co-holder of the chair.

"Safran believes in the wealth of opportunities offered by joint academic/industry approaches. One of the Group's priorities is to accelerate materials research, based on data analysis and computational physics. That's the very essence of the research to be carried our through this chair." Christian Rey, distinguished expert in computational mechanics, Safran.

This project reflects MINES ParisTech's ambitious objectives within the scope of its strategic plan, to meet tomorrow's scientific and technological challenges, and to make concrete advances towards resolving the challenges facing society, and in this case the aerospace sector.

At the same time as the inauguration of the BIGMECA chair, Safran and the students' association (BDE) of MINES ParisTech will also sign a partnership agreement to support a sustained relationship between students and industry, to bolster synergies between research and teaching, and to more effectively organize the links between companies and their contacts in schools, including students, professors and researchers.

About MINES ParisTech - @MINES_ParisTech

MINES ParisTech, a component of PSL University, trains engineers to meet the challenges of tomorrow and make them into scientific and international leaders. As part of its strategic plan, the school aims to be a reference player in the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship, energy transition and materials for more economical technologies, mathematics and digital engineering. Its goal is to transform industry, including health, while remaining faithful, since its creation in 1783, to its values of solidarity and openness to society.
