Messier-Bugatti-Dowty celebrates installation of its first landing gears on the Airbus A320neo

Toulouse, France, July 16th, 2014

Messier-Bugatti-Dowty (Safran) celebrated today the recent installation of the first set of flight-test instrumented landing gears for the Airbus A320neo program – on which the first aircraft rolled-out from Airbus' final assembly facilities in Toulouse on July 1st. The official A320neo landing gear handover ceremony took place today in Toulouse, hosted by Klaus Roewe, Airbus Senior Vice President, A320neo program, and Gilles Bouctot, Chief Operating Officer and head of the landing gear division of Messier-Bugatti-Dowty.

Incumbent landing gear supplier for the A320 family, Messier-Bugatti-Dowty was selected in 2011 to supply modified landing gears for current A320 family aircraft that would also support the transition to the A320neo program without further modification. Over the past three years, development and manufacturing teams have introduced enhancements to the current gears which meet new efficiency targets whilst maintaining the proven in-service performance record of the A320 landing gear.

These evolutions include a reinforcement of the landing gear structure to accommodate the increased design loads of the NEO aircraft. In addition, the gears include a wider use of anti-corrosion and protective coatings, which contribute to the target of achieving an extended service interval of 12 years between overhauls, a 20% increase over current single aisle TBOs.

During the ceremony Gilles Bouctot stated, "Today we celebrate not only the first A320neo landing gear shipset, but also the 6,243rd delivery for the Airbus single aisle program, building on 30 years of partnership with Airbus. We have worked closely with Airbus to deliver an enhanced product which combines increased cost-efficiency and reliability whilst still maintaining product commonality between existing and future Airbus single aisle fleets. Today both A320ceo and A320neo operators will benefit from the latest performance improvements."

Messier-Bugatti-Dowty's worldwide industrial network based in France, the UK, Mexico, Canada and China currently delivers 42 shipsets per month to Airbus Final Assembly Lines in Toulouse, Hamburg, China and soon Alabama in 2015. For the A320ceo aircraft, the new landing gear will ramp up to a production rate operating at full capacity before A320neo entry into service.

Messier-Bugatti-Dowty also supplies wheels and carbon brakes and landing systems equipment for the A320 program.
