Qantas chooses Messier-Bugatti-Dowty wheels and carbon brakes for its Boeing 737 Next-Generation fleet
Farnborough, UK, July 14th, 2014
Australian airline Qantas has chosen Messier-Bugatti-Dowty wheels and carbon brakes for its fleet of Boeing 737 Next-Generation twinjets. The contract covers 30 new aircraft and another 70 to be retrofitted.
With this latest contract, Messier-Bugatti-Dowty consolidates its leadership position in the 737 Next-Generation carbon brake market.
The operational advantages offered by Messier-Bugatti-Dowty's carbon brakes on the 737 Next-Generation are well known, especially weight savings of 770 lbs (350 kgs) per aircraft versus steel brakes, which helps reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Messier-Bugatti-Dowty's carbon brakes also offer far greater endurance (more than 2,200 landings between overhauls) and a three-fold reduction in maintenance costs.
Qantas already benefits from this reliability and performance on other aircraft types, since the heat sink on the carbon brake for the 737 Next-Generation is identical to the one used by MBD carbon brakes that have equipped the airline's Boeing 767 fleet for the last ten years.
Chris Nassenstein, Executive Manager of Qantas Engineering, said, "The decisive factors in our selection were the weight savings and high reliability offered by MBD carbon brakes, along with excellent support services. We are delighted to further cement our partnership with Messier-Bugatti-Dowty."
Vincent Mascré, Chairman and CEO of Messier-Bugatti-Dowty, added, "With this major contract, Qantas becomes our largest customer for our 737 Next-Generation brakes in the Asia-Pacific region. We are very pleased that Qantas has continued to express their trust in our expertise."
