Sagem to supply air-surface detection systems for Brazil’s four new-generation submarines

Paris le Bourget, Euronaval 2010 exhibition, October 25, 2010

Sagem (Safran group) has signed a contract with French ship-builder DCNS for the development and production of air-surface detection systems to be fitted on four conventional submarines ordered by Brazil.

Sagem will supply three assemblies for each ship:

  • Series 30 SMS (1) multi-sensor tracking optronics mast, with a wide-array infrared imager and high-definition color camera.
  • Series 20 APS (2) attack periscope, also incorporating a high-definition color camera.
  • Series 10 CSR (3) navigation radar mast.

Featuring a modular design, the new generation of non-penetrating masts and periscopes developed by Sagem meets the changing needs of today's navies, since they can easily integrate additional sensors, whether optronic or ESM (electronic support measures). Furthermore, this family of masts is designed to enable navies to carry out their own advanced maintenance.

The systems intended for Brazil's new submarines also feature advanced technologies developed by Sagem : integrated digital imaging system, high-resolution panoramic display, user-friendly operation from multifunction combat system consoles, etc.

1 – SMS : Search Mast System
2 – APS : Attack Periscope System
3 – CSR : Compact Submarine Radar
