Job description

General Responsibilities/Purposes:
Design parts and assemblies of complex machines, structure, or control systems in accordance with engineering specifications often utilizing wide latitude for the exercise of initiative and inventiveness. May require independent work to solve design problems with minimal or no engineering input.
Specific Duties/Accountabilities Approx. % of Time
Using basic engineering information, prepare scale engineering CAD models and drawings of machines, equipment, components, assemblies, panel assemblies, motor control centers, etc. Write ECOs to release documentation and load models and drawings into SmarTeam. 50%
Perform standard design calculations relative to sizing structural members and foundations. Specify hydraulic and pneumatic components and evaluate component kinematics and motion. 10%
Perform standard design calculations relative to selecting power transmission equipment and electrical components plus necessary hardware for both panel design and installation. 5%
Select equipment and material for designs. 10%
Perform web searches as required to retrieve 3D CAD models. Contact component suppliers to obtain applicable specifications, CAD models and performance characteristics. 5%
Review CAD designs and drawings with prospective fabricators and subcontractors to verify manufacturability of designs. 5%
Review checked drawing packages for design integrity and compliance to company standards. Perform CAD interference checks to ensure model integrity. 5%
Coordinate design requirements with Engineers and Designers as required. 5%
Assist in making estimates of time and material to accomplish proposed projects. Support and attend Preliminary and Critical Design Reviews as required 5%

Complementary description

I. Education or Basic Knowledge Required
Technical or trade school graduate or high school equivalent with specialized training in CAD design, Product Life Management software and drafting skills; or 2-3 years technical courses directed at obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering; or equivalent work experience in an engineering firm.
II. Experience Required
5-7 years experience in CAD design work and utilizing the knowledge of basic engineering principles, design practices and current manufacturing methods, material and equipment.
III. Complexity of Duties
High degree of judgment and planning required to provide quality, error free designs on schedule. High degree of initiative and inventiveness is required to solve complicated design requirements with minimal engineering input.
IV. Responsibility for Errors
High degree of responsibility for errors, which may not be easily verified by supervisor, is required. Errors may result in production delays, financial loss and product reliability.
V. Responsibility for Relationships with Others
Frequent contact with engineering personnel, vendors and customers to achieve desirable performance is required.
VI. Type of Supervision
Provides directive supervision to Designers as necessary to accomplish project assignments.
VII. Extent of Supervision
May provide directive supervision for 1-5 people depending on project assignments.
