Aerospace

Safran designs and develops innovative aircraft products and services in the United Kingdom : complete nacelles for commercial aircraft engines, electrical power generation systems for aircraft manufacturers, test cells and other equipment for aircraft engines, customer support and MRO (maintenance, repair & overhaul) services for civil and military aircraft landing gear, engineering services and interior furnishing. One of the Gloucester plants, for example, makes the main landing gear for Airbus' single aisle family (A320neo family) and long range aircraft (A330, A340 and A350 XWB), while our facility in Burnley makes nacelles and thrust reversers for all types of aircraft, from business jets to wide body commercial jets. The Pitstone plant makes electrical equipment for the Airbus A380 and A320, Embraer ERJ 145, Bombardier GX and Dassault Aviation Falcon 7X. Through Zodiac Aerospace, Safran is also present on the aircraft seats market. The Group was a pioneer in the design of the lie-flat seats (horizontal bedchairs) and is the centre of excellence for first-class seats.

Rolls-Royce and Safran Transmission Systems signed an agreement in October 2014 to create Aero Gearbox International, a 50/50 joint company in charge of developing power transmission and accessory drive systems. Based on a 25-year, renewable partnership, Aero Gearbox International will be the exclusive supplier of these systems for all future commercial aircraft engines made by Rolls-Royce. The Derby engineering office, located close to Rolls-Royce teams, is involved in the design and development of power transmission systems.

CFM International, the 50/50 joint company between Safran Aircraft Engines and GE, makes the CFM56© and LEAP© engines that power single-aisle commercial jets for easyJet, British Airways, Jet2 and Thomson Airways.

Safran's largest UK customer for its helicopter engines is the Ministry of Defence, although the number of customers in the civil sector is growing steadily. Nowadays, the turbine engines made by Safran for civil helicopters are among other things in service in the Royal Air Force, the Royal Navy, the British Army and operators such as Babcock, Bristow or CHC. The Group's plant in Fareham, Hampshire, provides responsive and dedicated support services for the Arriel and Arrius engines deployed by customers in Britain and Ireland.

Safran is a major supplier of MRO services in the UK, spanning aircraft engine nacelles, landing gear and components for civil and military aircraft. We also deliver complete engineering solutions, from helping customers identify their exact requirements all the way through delivery.

Defense

Building on shared strategic objectives, Paris and London formed an extensive and structural defense relationship, bolstered by the so-called Lancaster House treaty, signed in 2010 and concerning collaboration on defense and security. This treaty established a pivotal operational partnership, in particular around the development of a Combined Joint Expeditionary Force (CJEF), including operational and industrial capabilities, plus strategic and diplomatic facets, with regular talks on major crises and developing issues. Given the current Brexit situation, the challenge for France is still to develop a structural bilateral collaboration with the United Kingdom. The keystone to this partnership continues to be the FCAS (Future Combat Air System), which has since become the FCAS TDC (Technology Development Cooperation).

Safran is at the heart of this project to develop a future-generation unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) that will considerably boost the capabilities of air forces when it enters services towards 2030.

 

A key UK partner

Safran works closely with local industry partners as well as the British government. In particular, Safran is a member of both the British aerospace, defense and security trade organization ADS, and the UK Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI), grouping universities and industry on research subjects such as "more electric" aircraft. Safran is also involved in the public-private Aerospace Growth Partnership (AGP), which also focuses on meeting challenges for tomorrow's aviation industry, further cementing our role as a key UK partner in our core businesses.
