Safran has formed partnerships with major research labs covering all key disciplines for the Group, not only in France but throughout Europe.

Safran’s collaborations with scientific research organizations, especially within joint units, helps researchers better understand the problems facing industry, and fosters greater industry involvement in high-level research. In France, the aerospace research agency Onera is a pivotal partner for the aerospace industry. This is also the case of the national scientific research agency CNRS and the labs in its “Engineering Sciences” department, which make a significant contribution to Safran’s own areas of research.
Safran has developed a rich panoply of research partners, including:
- CERFACS (European Center for Research and Advanced Training in Scientific Computation), which also encompasses EADS, EDF, Météo France and Total.
- CEA, the French atomic energy commission, which works with Safran on materials used for atmospheric reentry vehicles, as well as the Megajoule laser program.
- Russian aerospace research organizations, which offer considerable test resources. This collaboration is organized around the Safran-Russia technical and scientific committee.
Thermostructural Composites Lab fetes 20th anniversary
The Thermostructural Composites Laboratory, known by its French initials LCTS, is one of the world’s largest research centers dedicated to ceramic matrix composites. Created in 1988, LCTS is a joint research unit grouping CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), the University of Bordeaux I, Snecma Propulsion Solide (SPS) and French atomic energy commission CEA.
LCTS conducts research on ceramic matrices and fibers to expand these materials’ temperature operating envelope. The lab has a diverse team of about 80 people: professor-researchers from the University of Bordeaux I, CNRS researchers, research engineers seconded by Safran and CEA, doctoral students and interns.
