Vulcain®2

Qualified in flight in February 2005, the Vulcain® 2 engine developed by Snecma considerably increased the performance of the Ariane 5 launch vehicle.

Snecma is prime contractor for Vulcain 2, developing and producing this new main-stage cryogenic engine for Europe’s Ariane 5 ECA heavy launcher.
Snecma is coordinating a number of European companies on this program, including Astrium GmbH (thrust chamber), Avio (liquid oxygen turbopump), Volvo Aero Corporation and fellow Group company Techspace Aero, which makes the cryogenic valves.

In further details...

Vulcain®2

Based on the original Vulcain engine for Ariane 5, Vulcain 2 powers the main stage of the heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA version. Developing about 286,000 lb of thrust, it is more powerful than its predecessor, and gives Ariane 5 ECA payload capacity into geostationary transfer orbit of nearly 10 metric tons. This performance capability also means that the launcher can orbit two large payloads on a single mission.
