Vinci®

With Vinci®, Snecma (Safran group) is paving the way for a new generation of rocket engines. The continuation of the development of this cryogenic engine, intended for the upper stage of the upgraded Ariane 5 ME launcher, was confirmed at the meeting of European space ministers in November 2008.

The development of the Vinci engine was assigned to Snecma, leading a European industry team including major partners such as Astrium GmbH, Avio, Volvo Aero and Techspace Aero.
Developing nearly 18 tons of thrust. Vinci incorporates a number of advances developed through Snecma’s research & technology efforts. In particular, it features an extendable nozzle, make of a carbon composite by Snecma Propulsion Solide, a fellow Group company. The ability to restart the upper-stage engine in flight will considerably expand Ariane 5’s mission capabilities.
