Leap-X

Leap-X is a new-generation engine designed and developed by CFM International, the 50/50 joint company of Snecma (Safran group) and General Electric, through a very technologically ambitious development program.

The new Leap-X engine will incorporate a number of innovative technologies developed through the Leap™ research & technology program. It is mainly designed to power the next generation of single-aisle commercial jets.

Leap-X features a host of advanced technologies to help reduce its fuel consumption by 15%, NOx emissions by 50% and noise to 15 EPNdB (effective perceived noise in decibels). For example, there will be fewer fan blades and they will be lighter, since they are made of composite materials using a proprietary woven 3D RTM (resin transfer molding) process. The use of these new composites on fan blades and other components would reduce the weight of each aircraft by up to 1,000 pounds.

LEAP-X1C

In December 2009, Comac (Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China) selected the Leap-X as the only Western propulsion system for its new single-aisle commercial jet, the C919. Currently designated the Leap-X1C, this engine will start ground tests in 2013 and is targeting certification in 2014, with service entry in 2016. CFM International will also supply the nacelle and thrust reverser, developed in partnership with Nexcelle, a 50/50 joint venture of Middle River Aircraft Systems (GE) and Aircelle (Safran).

Our partners

A major partnership with General Electric. Back in 1974 Snecma (Safran group) and General Electric created CFM International, an equally-owned joint venture, to develop the CFM56 turbofan engine for single-aisle commercial jets. Snecma is also a partner to GE on several larger turbofans, the CF6, GE90 and GP7200. On July 13, 2008, at the Farnborough air show in Britain, the two engine-makers signed an agreement renewing their partnership until 2040, as well as adding services to the agreement.
