United Nations Global Compact

As a responsible corporate citizen, Safran signed the United Nations Global Compact in 2013, affirming our membership in a global community of businesses committed to the values of human rights, labor law, environmental protection and the fight against corruption. This initiative perfectly reflects our own Code of Ethics, with a commitment to supporting the continuous improvement and sustainable development of our business.

Initiated by the UN Secretary General at the time, Kofi Annan, the Global Compact rallies companies, organizations, employees and civil society around ten universal principles concerning human rights, labor standards, the environment and the fight against corruption.

Through a collective effort, the Global Compact seeks to promote responsible corporate citizenship to ensure that the business community helps develop the solutions needed to meet the challenges of globalization.

Global Compact: 10 principles

The Global Compact asks businesses to adopt, support and apply, within their respective spheres of influence, a set of fundamental values (concerning human rights, labor law, the environment and the fight against corruption). In other words, businesses are only asked to change in the areas that really concern them.

The ten principles are derived from the following texts:

  • Universal Declaration of Human Rights
  • International Labour Organization's Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work
  • Rio Declaration on Environment and Development
  • United Nations Convention Against Corruption.

 

Within these four main categories the 10 principles are as follows:

Human Rights

 

  • 1. Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights;
  • 2. Make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

 

Labor

  • 3. Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
  • 4. The elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor;
  • 5. The effective abolition of child labor; and
  • 6. The elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Environment

  • 7. Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
  • 8. Undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
  • 9. Encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Anti-Corruption

  • 10. Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
